Mark’s lutherie process is time-tested to consistently produce beautiful instruments. Violins from his shop are able to perform at the highest level, with excellent tone, easy playability, and professional durability. As a Master Luthier, Mark has perfected his process of making handmade violins and stringed instruments around the following four key components.
First and foremost, he concentrates on the tone of the instrument. For a stringed instrument to achieve excellent tone, it starts with using the highest quality wood. Mark begins every instrument with finest air dried wood that the world has to offer, ensuring that the instrument will be able to achieve an excellent tone when completed.
Next is the “reading” of the wood. With his experience, Mark has developed a keen understanding of the density and stability of the woods used. Using tap tones during the carving process, he ensures that the instruments have the right levels of both evenness and clarity.
The third component is the finishing process. Throughout the years of practicing his craft, Mark has perfected a finishing formula to balance and protect an instrument without hindering its voice. Again, this ensures that the tone of the instrument will be clear and strong.
Lastly, before any project is complete, Mark takes the necessary time to focus on the playability of the instrument. This is accomplished through an exacting set up process that includes intonation & the height of strings in relation to the fingerboard.
Mark has been a professional musician for forty years and has a natural feel for the playability of countless instruments. Whether crafting a violin, cello, guitar, or mandolin, making the instrument easy to play is always his final goal.
If your looking for a quality instrument for you to pass on the gift of music to your children and grandchildren generation after generation this should be your next step. - Bob Marshall
